Breaking the Cycle of School
Dropouts in Rwanda.

In Rwanda, a significant number of students are dropping out of school, which has major consequences for both the students and their communities. The BTS program has been initiated to address this problem, building on previous successful experiences.

Who Are We?

The BTS program is designed to help dropouts return to school or gain vocational skills. It builds on the successful experience of a modest project in Musanze District, where accurate monitoring of the students was the main success factor. The program also seeks to create vocational training opportunities in agriculture and technical professions, partnering with Susa Gardens for internships and learning opportunities. The program will rely on funding from various sources, including tourism and sponsorships, and will work with other partners to maximize impact.

Projects

According to the report of MINEDUC and UNICEF Rwanda (2019), 13.4% of 12-year-old boys and 5.2% of 12-year-old girls have dropped out of school at least once during their education.

This translates into a high number of students stranded, with negative impacts on their personal development and employment prospects.

Dropping out also increases the risk of inappropriate behavior and crime, which is a burden for the community.

Susa II school was chosen as a partner school for the BTS program, based on a visit and inspiring conversation. The school has dropouts and many children who cannot attend due to poverty, lack of motivation, and inability to afford school materials and feeding programs.

The BTS program aims to support these students and address the underlying causes of poverty and motivation.
